Ann Steiner is a New York based photographer. She is a Psychoanalyst who specializes in trauma with degrees from Columbia University and New York University.
Steiner's interest in documentary photography began when she was a High School art student. She is specifically interested in the documentation of the inner and outer lives of people and communities. She is driven by the same forces to understand human nature that draw her to work as a psychoanalyst. When Steiner feels excited and compelled to shoot a project eventually the project takes a shape and a rhythm.
In time, the project teaches her something about herself, her own relationship to her subjects, and reveals her reasons for wanting to shoot the project in the first place. Photography has been a way of understanding and sharing this understanding with her viewers.
